Charlie Puth Offers Emotional Goodbye to TikTok Before U.S. Ban

Charlie Puth is bidding an emotional farewell to his followers as the United States is about to ban TikTok. The singer-songwriter lately took to the platform and surfaced singing his heart out to the piano version of his 2015 hit "See You Again," featuring Wiz Khalifa. Keeping completely mum, Puth lets his music do all the talking and adds poignant chords that send the already-appealing nostalgic factor of the song through the roof.

Fans React to Tearful Tribute

The performance certainly pulled at many strings for the fans of Puth, evidenced in the comments section: "Charlie, you know this is going to make everyone cry," one said, while another shared, "This will actually make me break down." The essence of such a soulful goodbye for many brought despair with an imminent ban in prospect.

Supreme Court Ruling Paves Way for Ban

The timing of Puth's post coincides with a major legal development. On Saturday, the Supreme Court refused to block a federal law that may ban TikTok in the U.S. as early as Sunday, January 19. The decision comes amid national security concerns over the app's Chinese parent company, ByteDance. ByteDance has challenged the ban on First Amendment grounds, but so far, the courts have ruled against the company.

A Possible Reprieve from Trump?

Hope for TikTok's future may now be lying with the incoming President of the United States, Donald Trump, who starts work this Monday, January 20. He has stated his desire to "negotiate a resolution" to keep the app available in the U.S. TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, has written to the incoming president in person, thanking him for offering an avenue of escape. "We are thankful to have a government leader who listened and understands our platform," Chew said after the court's ruling.

Other Stars Take Their Leaves

Of course, Puth isn't the only one saying goodbye to TikTok, in case it goes. Pop star Kesha also shared a silly goodbye video set to her 2009 song "TiK ToK." Throughout the video, she stares blankly into the camera and captioned, "TikTok might be temporary, but TiK ToK is forever." With the supposed ban looming near, several creators and fans take their last minutes on the app.
